TPMS sensors are mounted in each wheel. Each TPMS has a unique ID, therefore the system can detect which wheel is low, if the vehicle presents it that way. Some vehicles also detect the spare tire, ergo the low pressure indicator might be the spare tire. I assume that this is down so the system does not get "confused" between your wheels and the ones that you are parked next to. Of course, when you change to a different set of TPMSs (which I do on track days) the system now has no clue. Fortunately, the 350Z flashes for a few miles and then goes solid on BUT no constant annoying "warning" bell.
